Donald Trump to call Putin, Zelenskyy on Monday for ending 'bloodbath' in Ukraine

Washington DC/IBNS: US President Donald Trump said he will have a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday morning to discuss ways to stop the Ukraine war, which he described as a 'bloodbath'.

Taking to Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said he'll also speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and "various members" of the NATO alliance on Monday.

He expressed hope that a ceasefire would take place between the two nations.

Hours after the US president's announcement, Russian forces launched the largest drone barrage on Ukraine since the start of its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Representatives from Ukraine and Russia on Friday held their first direct talks in more than three years, mediated by Turkey.

Even though the two sides agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners in the coming days, expectations from the same were low after Putin decided not to attend, sending only a low-level delegation.

Russia also declined to commit to a ceasefire proposal.

During the talks in Istanbul, Russia repeated broad demands, including its country's control of five regions of Ukraine.

In an interview on Fox News's Special Report with Bret Baier, Trump suggested that a face-to-face meeting with Putin might be the only way to achieve a ceasefire.

He had also lashed out at Zelensky, repeating his claim that the Ukrainian leader doesn't "have the cards" to hold off Russia.
