Former Bangladesh President and military ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad passes away

Dhaka, July 14 (IBNS): Former Bangladesh President and military ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad on Sunday passed away in Dhaka, media reports said.

He was 89.

He reportedly died due to age-related complications, local media reports said.

Ershad was undergoign treatment at a hospital in the country for the past few days.

Ershad was the Army chief of staff when he had seized power in a bloodless coup on Apr 24, 1982.

He even went ahead and declared himself president of the country in the next year.

He ruled the nation till 1990.

He was later forced to resign from the piosition  in the face of mass upheaval and weeks of anti-government protests.

Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid and PM Sheikh Hasina have condoled his death.
