Former TV presenter gunned down in Afghanistan
A former TV presenter in an Afghan news channel was on Thursday gunned down in the southern province of Kandahar, thus adding one more name to the long list of assassinated people, associated with the country’s media industry.
Nimat Rawan, a former news presenter at TOLOnews, was gunned down on his way to his office in Kandahar city. Basheer Ahmadi, the spokesperson for the province, confirmed that two gunmen were involved in the killing.
Rawan has recently joined the Afghan ministry of finance and was working in the communication department there. Significantly, the killing came a day after the Taliban, the main Afghan insurgent group, has issued a threat to Afghan media for what they called “biased coverage” of the conflict.
Earlier this year, three female journalists had been gunned down by unknown militants. Last year too, over fifteen journalists and media workers were assassinated in the country. The spate of killings led many journalists, predominantly female, to quit the profession.
