French court suspends burkini ban

Paris, Aug 26 (IBNS): In a major decision, a French court on Friday suspended controversial ban on the full-body burkini swimsuits by a French Riviera town.

"The State Council (Conseil d'État) gave the ruling following a request from the Human Rights League to overturn the burkini ban in the Mediterranean town of Villeneuve-Loubet on the grounds it contravenes civil liberties," France 24.com reported.

Villeneuve-Loube was one among around 30 towns which had imposed similar bans.

Amnesty International has welcomed the decision by the court.

John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International’s Europe Director said in a statement: "By overturning a discriminatory ban that is fuelled by and is fuelling prejudice and intolerance, today’s decision has drawn an important line in the sand.”

“French authorities must now drop the pretence that these measures do anything to protect the rights of women. Rather, invasive and discriminatory measures such as these restrict women’s choices and are an assault on their freedoms of expression, religion and right to non-discrimination,”Dalhuisen said.

“These bans do nothing to increase public safety, but do a lot to promote public humiliation. Not only are they in themselves discriminatory, but as we have seen, the enforcement of these bans leads to abuses and the degrading treatment of Muslim women and girls,” he said.
