John Tory to become TIFF board chair as Jeffrey Remedios steps down

Toronto: Former Toronto Mayor John Tory will become chair of the Toronto International Film Festival’s board on October 1, succeeding Jeffrey Remedios after five years in the role.

Tory, who served as Toronto’s mayor from 2014 to 2023, was appointed by TIFF’s board of directors, the festival said in a statement Thursday.

Tory previously supported TIFF during his time as mayor and served as co-chair of a campaign to build TIFF Lightbox, the festival’s headquarters and cultural complex.

"I look forward to taking the helm from Jeffrey and building on the strong foundation he has established," Tory said.

Remedios, the president and CEO of Republic Collective at Universal Music Group, became TIFF board chair in 2021. During his tenure, the festival underwent post-pandemic recovery, refreshed TIFF Lightbox and launched TIFF: The Market.

TIFF also credited Remedios with helping guide the organization through industry challenges, including the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and with overseeing strategic planning.

"TIFF is one of the things that makes our city and country so special," Remedios said, as he thanked Tory, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, staff and fellow board members.

The festival also announced three new board members: Deborah Flint, president and CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority; filmmaker, producer and philanthropist David Furnish; and Daniel Tisch Echevarría, president and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

Asha Daniere is leaving the board after nine years of service, including six years as chair of its Governance, Nominating & Human Resources Committee.

Tory’s appointment comes as TIFF continues to expand its role as a cultural and film-industry institution in Toronto and internationally.
