NY mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to move into Gracie Mansion; cites family safety, focus on ‘affordability agenda’

New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced that he and his wife, Rama, will relocate to Gracie Mansion once he assumes office in January, saying the decision was driven by security considerations and his resolve to stay focused on delivering his “affordability agenda” for the city.

In a statement posted on social media, Mamdani said the move was a difficult one, describing how deeply attached he and his wife are to their Astoria home. “Our home in Astoria is special, and the neighbourhood will always live inside me and my work,” he wrote.

Explaining his decision, the 34-year-old added, “This came down to our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for.”

He also fondly recalled everyday moments from the Queens neighbourhood — from Adeni chai stalls to multilingual street conversations and the mix of seafood and shawarma aromas that define the area.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who campaigned on housing stability and affordability, won the mayoral race last month by a wide margin, becoming the youngest New York mayor in more than a century.

He had recently faced criticism for living in a rent-stabilised, subsidised apartment while earning a $142,000 annual salary.

His current one-bedroom Astoria unit, built in 1929, spans 800 square feet and costs about $2,300 a month, with heat and hot water included, standard under New York City law. The building has an elevator and a communal laundry room.

Gracie Mansion, by contrast, offers sweeping views of the East River, formal entertaining rooms, a grand fireplace, and a dining area adorned with Paris-themed wallpaper, along with meals prepared by a full-time chef.

It also provides significantly enhanced security, including fencing, cameras and a constant police presence.

According to the New York Times, it is this combination of safety and official hosting space that has led most mayors to ultimately choose Gracie Mansion as their residence.
