Ottawa/IBNS: June 2020 is being observed as a National Indigenous History Month (NIHM) all over Canada, media reports said.

NIMH provides an opportunity for all Ontarians to learn more about the rich history of the indigenous peoples, their heritage, diversity, and culture, their achievement, to help preserve Indigenous culture, traditions, and languages.

During a ceremony at the Toronto City Hall on Monday, the rainbow and transgender flags were raised by Toronto Mayor John Tory, Coun. Kristyn Wong-Tam, who represents Ward 13-Toronto Centre, and Jad Jaber, a member of Pride Toronto's board of directors.

The ceremony kicks off Pride Toronto's 2020 Virtual Pride Festival.

Tory said the festival, which runs from June 1 to 28, is a virtual celebration showcasing the history, courage, and diversity of Toronto's lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, questioning, and Two-Spirit communities.

The event will conclude with the Virtual Pride Festival Weekend from June 26 to 28.

On June 1, the first day of NIHM in Canada Ontario government had announced the establishment of a new Indigenous Women’s Advisory Council to provide culturally-relevant advice on violence prevention, help indigenous communities, indigenous women, and girls lead a safe and secure life.

Co-chaired by Jill Dunlop, Associate Minister of Children and Women’s Issues, the Council will focus on serious issues like human trafficking, child, youth and family healing and well-being, and Ontario’s response to the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
