At least 14 people were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station in Pakistan's Swat district on Sunday, according to media reports.

Swat police spokesperson Nasir Iqbal Karimi confirmed to Dawn that 14 people had died in the attack.

Swat District Police Officer (DPO) Umar Khan told the newspaper that the attacker detonated the explosive device after being stopped and searched by police at the entrance to the station.

"Security forces have cordoned off the area, and an investigation is underway to collect further evidence," he said.

The explosion occurred while hundreds of people were taking part in a public demonstration at nearby Kabal Chowk.

Those injured were rushed to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The demonstration had drawn a large crowd, and the blast occurred as the final speaker was addressing participants, triggering panic in the area.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the bombing and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
