Pentagon sees no imminent threat in Iran's designation of CENTCOM: Spokesperson

Washington, Apr 9 (Sputnik/UNI)The US Department of Defense (DoD) does not see any imminent threat from Iran after its Supreme National Security Council designated the Central Command as a terrorist organization, Pentagon Spokeswoman Commander Rebecca Rebarich told Sputnik on Monday.

"DoD's rules of engagement have not changed as a result of this announcement," Rebarich said. "We have no credible information to suggest there is an imminent threat."

Rebarich added that the Pentagon does not disclose adjustments to force protection levels and takes prudent measures to ensure the safety of US forces around the globe.

Earlier on Monday, US President Donald Trump announced in a statement that his administration would designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said later in the day that the new designation would take effect one week.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated since Washington withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement last year and reinstated sanctions against Tehran. The nuclear agreement envisaged gradual lifting of sanctions in return for Iran keeping its nuclear program peaceful.
