Kathmandu, Aug 3 (IBNS): In a major political development in the Himalayan nation, CPN Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal was elected on Wednesday as the Prime Minister of Nepal.

Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar announced that Dahal has been elected as the PM after he got over 50 per cent vote of current strength of the Parliament.

"While total 573 lawmakers had cast their votes in the poll, 363 were for Dahal, according to Speaker Gharti," The Himalayan Times reported.

The newly elected PM was backed by the Nepali Congress.

According to reports, the constituents of the United Democratic Madhesi Front and the Federal Alliance and some other fringe parties also backed Dahal who was the only candidate for the top executive position of the Himalayan country.

"Total 210 lawmakers including those of CPN-UML and Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal had cast votes against the Maoist leader," the news paper reported.
