Questions raised after US teacher arrested for firing inside classroom

Dalton, Mar 1 (IBNS): A week after US President lobbied for arming teachers to avoid any untoward incident relating to gun violence, Dalton police arrested an educator for firing inside an empty classroom during work hours, thus raising questions about the viability of Trump's proposed plan.

The incident took place at Dalton High School in the US state of Georgia, a fortnight after 17 people lost their lives in a shooting incident in Florida.

The perpetrator allegedly locked his pupils in the hallway and barricaded himself inside the class. He then fired a single bullet when the headmaster of the school tried to open the door using a spare key.

The teacher has been identified as Jesse Randall Davidson, 53.

According to police, no one was hurt or killed, though one person sprained an ankle.

Davidson was nabbed after a 45-minute standoff between him and police ended.

He has been charged with 'aggravated assault, carrying weapon on school grounds, terroristic threats, reckless conduct, possession of gun during commission of a crime, and disrupting public school'.

Davidson, who taught social studies, joined the institution in 2004. He also doubled as the school football team announcer.
