Somalia probes plane crash after 6 killed

Mpgadishu/Xinhua: Somali government said Tuesday it has launched investigations after a light aircraft delivering medical supplies crashed in southwest region on Monday, killing all six people onboard.

The ministry of transport and civil aviation said it will publish the findings of the investigations in a timely manner after the Embraer 120 plane with tail registration 5Y-AXO and belonging to African Express crashed while landing in Bardale airport.

"The government is conducting thorough investigation and will publish the findings in a timely manner, our deepest condolences to the families and friends who may have lost loved ones in this terrible accident," the ministry said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

The government said the plane had six people -- the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer, a trainee pilot, and two airline workers.

The ministry said the plane, which was operating as cargo plane from Baidoa to Bardale when it crashed at around 3.45 p.m. on Monday, was ferrying medical supplies for use in the fight against COVID-19 in Bardale.

The African Airways is a Kenyan aviation company that has been operating cargo and passenger flights to Somalia in the last three decades.

African Express is owned by Captain Musa Hassan Bulhan, a career pilot and one of the pioneer aviation entrepreneurs in Kenya.
