Sri Lanka blasts: Government declares national mourning on Tuesday

Colombo, Apr 22 (IBNS): With the country still in shock following the eight blasts that rocked the nation on Easter Sunday, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday announced that Apr 23 will be observed in the country as 'Day of National Mourning'.

" President @MaithripalaS announced the declaration of 23rd April as the Day of National Mourning for the victims of ruthless terrorist attacks at churches and hotels in the country on April 21," the official government website news.lk reported.

The Sri Lankan Government Analyst’s Department has confirmed that the attack on the three churches and the hotels in Colombo had been carried out by suicide bombers. 

At least 290 people were killed in the blasts which even targeted three churches in the country.

So far 24 people have been arrested.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incidents so far.
