Toronto murder: Man arrested 7 months after Indian-origin partner found dead

A 32-year-old man has been arrested nearly seven months after his Indian-origin partner was found murdered at a Toronto residence, bringing a major development in a case that shocked the Indian community in Canada.

Toronto Police said Abdul Ghafoori was arrested on Friday at a Toronto airport. He had been wanted on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Himanshi Khurana, 30.

Police said officers from the fugitive squad and homicide unit worked with national and international law enforcement agencies to bring Ghafoori back to Canada.

They did not disclose where he had been staying before his return.

Himanshi Khurana found dead in December

Khurana was found dead at a residence in Toronto on December 20, after police received a report about a missing woman the previous night.

Officers were alerted at around 10:41 pm on December 19 about a woman missing from the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area.

A search operation was launched, and her body was found inside a house in the same area at around 6:30 am the following day.

Police subsequently declared the death a homicide.

The case was Toronto's 40th homicide of 2025.

Police identified partner as suspect

As the investigation progressed, police established that Khurana and Ghafoori were in an "intimate partner relationship".

Ghafoori was subsequently identified as a suspect and became the subject of a Canada-wide warrant on a first-degree murder charge.

Police had also released his photograph and appealed to the public for information that could help locate him.

His arrest at a Toronto airport on Friday marks the latest development in the nearly seven-month investigation.

India expressed shock over death

The Consulate General of India in Toronto had earlier expressed shock over Khurana's death and said it was in touch with her family and local authorities.

"We are deeply saddened and shocked by the murder of Ms. Himanshi Khurana, a young Indian national," the consulate had said in a statement.

It extended condolences to her family and said all possible assistance was being provided in coordination with Canadian authorities.
