Police said a 3-year-old boy was injured after he shot himself with his mother's gun in the US state of Detroit.

Police Chief James White told CBS News that a preliminary investigation revealed that the boy's mother came home from work and set her gun down on the dresser.

The child got the gun at that moment.

"A 3-year-old toddler roaming around, they see you put the gun down, they're probably gonna pick it up just like anything else," White said in a news conference on Friday as quoted by CBS News.

Police have started investigating whether the mother had a licence for the gun.
