Mumbai, Sept 21 (IBNS): Nandita Das directorial Hindi film Manto, which is a biopic on late Urdu author Saadat Hasan Manto, released on Friday.

Manto reflects the life of the author, whose trenchant short stories were greatly acclaimed while creating controversy in his time.

Born in 1912, Manto had died in January 1955 in Pakistan.

The film will be a four-year story focusing on the time period before and after Partition of India, which took place in 1947.

The film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the lead actor.

As Nandita told IBNS, Nawazuddin did not take any remuneration for playing the role.

Bollywood veteran Rishi Kapoor has also played a short role in the film.

The film had premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2018 earlier this month.
