Bachchan, who got married to his contemporary actor Jaya Bachchan (then Jaya Bhaduri), is a father of a son and a daughter, actor Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta.

The actor, who began his Bollywood career with Anand in 1971, has a career spanning close to 50 years.

Bachchan first caught the limelight as an "angry young man" in 1970s giving a tough competition to superstar Rajesh Khanna who had excelled in romantic films. With film like Deewar, Zanjeer, Sholay, Bachchan became a role model for several youth at that time.

Later he had also taken part in a number of romantic films.

After a massive downfall in his career, the superstar made a comeback in the big screens with Mohabbatein in 2000. Recreating himself in the early 21st century, Bachchan once again turned the tides in his favour with films like Black, Paa, Sarkar, Piku and others.

Bachchan will next be seen in Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. He is also hosting television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati presently.

The Indian government this year announced that Bachchan will be conferred Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is the country's highest honour in cinema.

Bachchan had earlier received Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Bibhushan.
