Ajay Devgn starrer Tanhaji surpasses Deepika Padukone's Chhapaak at box office
Mumbai/IBNS: Actor Ajay Devgn starrer Hindi film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior has surpassed Deepika Padukone's controversy-hit Chhapaak in terms of box office collections on the first day since its release.
According to film critic Taran Adarsh, Tanhaji has earned Rs. 15.10 crore while Chhapaak has collected just Rs. 4.77 crore in the Indian box office.
Chhapaak was caught in the midst of a controversy after its lead actress and co-producer Padukone visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) earlier this week and stood in the middle of the protesting Leftist students who were agitating against the assault on them including Students Union president Aishe Ghosh and Professor Sucharita Sen.
Following Padukone's visit, a section of Twitter users called for the boycott of the Bollywood superstar's then upcoming film with #boycottchhapaak while an another section of Twitterati lauded the actress with #IStandWithDeepika and #ISupportDeepika.
#Tanhaji exceeds expectations and posts healthy total on Day 1... Biz grew rapidly from post-noon onwards... Excellent in #Maharashtra [#Mumbai, parts of #CP and #Nizam circuits]... Glowing word of mouth should ensure solid growth on Day 2 and 3... Fri ₹ 15.10 cr. #India biz.

Chhapaak is based on the life of acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal who was portrayed in the film by Padukone.
The film was also caught in the controversy when Agarwal's legal representative Aparna Bhat had moved the court and sought a stay in the film after finding her name missing in the credit roll.
The Patiala House Court in Delhi has asked makers of the film to add Bhat's name in the credit role of director Meghna Gulzar's latest project.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, a much different film from Chhapaak in scale, is a biographical period and action film set in the 17th century which revolves around the battle of Sinhagad. The film is based on the life of Tanaji Malusare, the military leader of Chatrapati Shivaji.
#Chhapaak is ordinary on Day 1... Collects well at select high-end multiplexes... Biz at Tier-2 and 3 cities and also mass circuits is way below the mark... Growth on Day 2 and 3 crucial for a respectable weekend total... Fri ₹ 4.77 cr. #India biz.
