Mumbai/IBNS: Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar turned emotional on his 54th birthday Thursday as it came just a day after he lost his mother Aruna Bhatia.

Sharing a picture with his mother on Twitter, Akshay said, "Would have never liked it this way but am sure mom is singing Happy Birthday to me from right up there! Thanks to each one of you for your condolences and wishes alike. Life goes on."

Akshay's ailing mother Aruna Bhatia passed away Wednesday morning.

The actor on the micro-blogging site said he was feeling "an unbearable pain" at this loss in his life.

He had tweeted, "She was my core. And today I feel an unbearable pain at the very core of my existence. My maa Smt Aruna Bhatia peacefully left this world today morning and got reunited with my dad in the other world. I respect your prayers as I and my family go through this period. Om Shanti."

After his mother was admitted to hospital, Akshay, who was shooting for 'Cindrella', flew back from London to Mumbai Monday.
