'Pink' is no longer a film, it has become a movement: Amitabh Bachchan

Kolkata, Sep 22 (IBNS): 'Pink' is no longer a film, rather it has become a movement, superstar Amitabh Bachchan said at a promotional event of the film in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Pink was released in the previous week.

Apart from Amitabh Bachchan, the event was attended by other lead actors of the film, Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi.

Directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, the film revolves around a courtroom drama raising questions on the liberalisation of women in the society.

Referring to the title of the film that is also a colour, Bachchan said: “Pink is the colour that is always associated with girls. We wonder why do we associate the colour pink with girls and blue with boys. It is seen that girls are gifted with cooking utensils while the boys with motor cars and this leads to discrimination. We seriously need to think about that. We have to uphold equality in the society.”

He  said: “The beliefs and customs in the society have been changing through many generations. Once we give position to women in our society, we could see wonders happening. Pink is no longer a girlish colour now but it has become a colour symbolising strength, bravery and equality. It signifies freedom and liberty for women. I think this film is going to give the taste of that freedom.”

Speaking about the message of the film, co-producer Shoojit Sircar said: “The film says that no one should do a moral policing on women. Let us start the process of liberalisation and take steps to achieve that. I believe in universal sisterhood. If all women are united, nothing can shake them. I do not know whether a man can help a woman or not but definitely a single woman can.”

Regarding the strenuous shooting period, lead actress Taapsee said: “The transformation from a victim to a survivor needed a lot of mental hard work, which affected me for sometime. After the shooting, I had to go for a week long break to come back to reality.”

Adding to that, Bachchan said: “During the making of the film, there were many such incidents where we broke down.”

Angad said in this context, that it was extremely difficult for him to portray the character since he never interacted with any man like Rajveer Singh (name of the character of Angad in the film).

“The female characters in the film were going through eternal turmoil and it was very disturbing for me to see that,” said the actor.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, who made his Hindi film directorial debut with Pink, shared his experience of shooting: “We all worked like a family and had a conviction in the film. I never seen the person Amitabh Bachchan on screen because he was completely immersed into the character that he was playing. I have no words to express that feeling of witnessing him on set.”

Taapsee who made her Bollywood debut in the film 'Chasme Badoor', said that the topic was sufficient reason for her to say yes to the script but Amitabh Bachchan was a bonus to it like an “icing on the cake”.
