Rangoon is a love story with the backdrop of war: Vishal Bhardwaj
“However, the crux of the film is patriotism,” he added.
Rangoon is a period film set during the Second World War and has a reference to freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s INA (Indian National Army).
The film has Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor in the lead roles.
The family members of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were present at the event.
Chandra Kumar Bose, grand nephew of Netaji, said after the screening: “With the name of the film Rangoon, history of Indian freedom movement as well as our family gets connected so we are happy.”
Speaking about the film, he said: “The Second World War in Rangoon is obviously connected with INA so in the backdrop of the story the Azad Hind Fauj comes to our mind.”
Rangoon, now Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar (formerly Burma) was under the Japanese occupation for a short period (1942-1945) and had suffered massive damage during the Second World War.
The film is shot in Arunachal Pradesh.
Regarding the shooting experience, the filmmaker said: “We had a great shooting experience. It was difficult to shoot a period film but the end results are good.”
Bhardwaj however disregarded Kangana Ranaut’s character to be a portrayal of Bollywood’s stunt woman Fearless Nadia.
“It is an original story with references. The real incidents were British rule and INA which I have mixed with fiction” the Omkara director said.
