Barbie may soon become highest grossing domestic film of 2023

Los Angeles: Director Greta Gerwig’s neon-coloured Barbie is shattering global Box Office records and might soon become the highest-grossing film in the domestic market in 2023.

“Barbie” raked in a stunning $155 million domestically in its opening weekend and last week joined the $1 billion club in global box office sales – a feat only achieved by about 50 films in history, adjusted for inflation, Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told CNN.

The movie expectedly earned $33.7 million this weekend, maintaining a stronghold in the market.

The comedy about the iconic doll is estimated to have reached $525 million domestic and nearly $1.2 billion worldwide, the American news channel reported.

Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on the same day July 21.

Both the movies shinned at the Box Office and dragged the audience to the theatre aid positive reviews.

Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated films and specials. The film follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis.

It features an ensemble supporting cast, including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Helen Mirren, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
