Director Nirmalya Majumder's Rain Host wins multiple awards

Kolkata, Sept 16 (IBNS): Director Nirmalya Majumder's short film Rain Host has won two awards at the 7th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival and 19th Calcutta International Cult Film Festival.

Rain Host won the award for Honourable Jury Mention at the 7th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival and for the director and outstanding achievement award at the 19th Calcutta International Cult Film Festival.

The film was also selected for Gold Movie Awards, London.

The film's plot is centred on the night of Aug 29, 2017 when Mumbai recorded 10 times more rain than the annual average in a single day.

Mumbaikars, under the #rainhost, tweeted their location, inviting people stranded outside, into their homes for warmth, tea, food and shelter. On this terribly rainy night, Rain Host Shikha welcomes an apparent stranger, Rohan, into her home. As soon as the two of them come face-to-face, it is revealed that they are former lovers.

As Rohan and Shikha attempt to reconnect through an evening of awkward and uncomfortable conversation, the film slowly peels off layers of their relationship. Shikha’s bitterness, anger and cynicism comes to the forefront over Rohan abandoning her eight years ago, without ever trying to keep in touch with her during that period.

He tries to convey to her his powerlessness in being forced into an arranged marriage by his parents and about his ‘normal’ life with a wife, child and a regular sales job. A life he describes as “a perfect graveyard of buried hopes”. The morning after, Rohan makes a discovery that brings his world crashing down. His inability to stand up for himself and Shikha, seven years ago, had come with a very dear price.

Rain Host was made in two languages, Hindi and English.

The casting of the film includes RJ Devaki and Jayesh Kodwani.

Devaki, a theater actor, writer, dancer and a Radio Professional has been one of the most inspiring youth icon for Gujarat. She has been awarded as the best actor Gujarat for 3 years in a row by Transmedia and has acted in more than 30 full length plays.

An acting alumnus of Whistling Woods, Jayesh Kodwani has since acted in several short films. A producer and editor himself, Jayesh has alongside his acting assignments, worked on several corporate films as a producer-director.

Director Nirmalya has 15 years of experience in film making. Nirmalya has made several short films among which Confessions and Final Flight Of The Soul have won Best Script and Best Film awards respectively. Apart from this, he has been making numerous corporate films, Ad films and music videos for several brands over the years.

Orginally from Kolkata, Nirmalya graduated from Xavier's Institute of Communication (Mumbai) as the topper of his batch and has also been a regular Guest Faculty at XIC giving lessons on Editing since the last 5 years.
