Satyajit Ray's wife passes away

Kolkata, June 2 (IBNS) Iconic Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray's wife Bijoya Ray died in Kolkata on Tuesday.

She was 98 when death came.

According to reports, she was recently admitted at a nursing home in Kolkata with acute pneumonia where she passed away at 6.06 pm.

Bijoya Ray, who was a constant inspiration and influence in Satyajit Ray's life, married the legendary filmmaker in 1949.

She  acted and sang playback song in a Bengali movie called Sesh Raksha in 1944 and also acted in the documentary Gaach (The Tree) in 1998.

Bijoya Ray wrote an autobiography "Amader Kotha".

She left behind her son Sandip Ray, daughter-in-law Lalita Ray and grandson Saurodip Ray.

Sandip Ray is also a well-known filmmaker.

Mourning her death, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Deeply saddened at the demise of Bijoya Roy. Am on the way to pay my condolences to Sandip Roy and rest of the family."

Satyajit Ray died in 1992.
