Our political drama was cancelled due to administrative pressure: Bengali actor Rwitobrato Mukherjee alleges
Kolkata/IBNS: Young Bengali actor Rwitobrato Mukherjee has alleged his political drama Desher Naamey was recently cancelled due to pressure from the state administration in West Bengal.
Rwitobroto took to social media to narrate how Desher Naamey was cancelled at the last moment in Kalyani.
He wrote on Facebook, "Our drama, dedicated to University Friends Group, 'Desher Naamey', which was about to be performed tomorrow in Kalyani, has been stopped. Those who organised and invited us, they were told from the upper levels, 'Don't do this drama, I am telling you for your good!'
"This is bad news, but not hurt. This is the victory. Our play message is on point! They scared us. We are all college students, shut down for fear of their drama. Said no 'political' drama! That's why I do drama, I shook them a little. I will do this as long as I can. We will do what we can by standing on the opposite side of this frightening, bullying."
In a similar way, drawing sharp criticisms, screening of director Anik Dutta's Bengali film Bhobishyoter Bhoot (Ghosts of the Future), a political satire from a filmmaker who was critical of the ruling Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, was stopped across the state in 2019.
The incident had occurred months after Dutta had raised his eyebrows over an excessive use of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's pictures at government-sponsored film and cultural centre, Nandan, during the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) in 2018.
Later, the screening of the film was resumed following the order of the Supreme Court.
