'Cheeni 2': 'Mental maturity and not age matters to me for friendship,' says Madhumita

Actress Madhumita Sarcar teamed up with her senior Aparajita Adhya and actor Soumya Mukherjee for Mainak Bhaumik's 'Cheeni 2', a sequel to 'Cheeni' but with a different storyline. Gearing up for the release, Madhumita speaks to IBNS correspondent Souvik Ghosh on the film, friendship beyond age, Hindi projects and more at Canteen Pub & Grub in Kolkata...

Q. How different is your character in 'Cheeni 2' as compared to the first part?

A. Going by the meaning of my name (Cheeni), my character creates a chemistry with everyone she mingles with. The film explores Cheeni's chemistry with Mishti (played by Aparajita Adhya) and Samy (played by Soumya Mukherjee).

Q. The film deals with friendship which is not restricted to age. Did you experience such a friendship in your life and fraternity?

A. Mental maturity matters to me. I develop friendships during my frequent trips to the hills. Except my school friends, all my friends are from different age brackets.

In this industry, I can become friends with anyone if we strike a connection. I am very open when it comes to friendship because I like real people. Maybe all are real, but my reality needs to match up with the person who intends to be my friend. 'Cheeni 2' reflects this message.

Q. What do you try to find in a friend?

A. I will be friends with someone if I can spend hours talking to them. Friendships develop very organically. We never used to think so much when we were in school. So why should we create parameters for friendship in adulthood?

Q. How much did your chemistry with Aparajita Adhya evolve in 'Cheeni 2'?

A. It was not something like that. We actors, I believe, will only evolve when our personal relationships won't matter, no matter how close we are, on the set. Me and Apa-di always have a blast when we connect together. Our chemistry often stems from our impromptu actions and reactions on the set.

Q. You earlier told IBNS that you react to your co-actor when it comes to acting. Did working in Mainak Bhaumik's setup help you in the process?

A. Mainak-da is a dream person to work with because he never demands anything on the shooting floor. He used to give the essence of a character and ask us to act. If our steps match his, Mainak-da will keep it or advise us to do something else. It's always brainstorming. Mainak-da never imposes his school of acting but he intends to make a collaboration of two schools to get the best work out of it.

Q. Tell us about your journey in Mumbai so far.

A. I am working in Hindi. My preparations are in full swing. Overall, I am very happy to be busy.

Q. Are you reuniting with Yash Daasguptaa again?

A. We are definitely eager to work together. But the work is in progress. We haven't zeroed down on which project we are going to collaborate on. But I would like to assure the audience that we are working together for sure.
