Priya Cinemas organises film festival on Ritkwik Ghatak

Kolkata, Apr 9 (IBNS) : The 'Ritwik Ghatak Film Festival' , which is organized by Ritwik Ghatak Memorial Trust and Priya Entertainments Pvt Ltd to pay tribute Ghatak's works, was inaugurated on Friday at Priya Cinema Hall in south Kolkata.

The festival was inaugurated by National Award Winning filmmaker Goutam Ghosh and Ghatak's daughter Samhita Ghatak.

Director Goutam Ghosh said he was very happy to be a part of such an initiative.

" Being a young filmmaker I became a disciple of Ritwik Ghatak. I had the oppurtunity to be associated with him for a year," he recalled.

Ghatak's daughter Samhita Ghatak described her father's struggle to make films.

Despite facing difficult situations, Ritwik Ghatak had became one of the recognised filmmakers of Indian cinema.

This festival started with the screening of  Gahtak's first feature film Nagarik. This film was one of the earliest example of Parallel Cinema or a Neo-Realist Indian Cinema along with Nemai Ghosh's film 'Chinnamool.

However, Nagarik (1952) was released after his death in 1977.

Writer Amit Chowdhury and Managing  Director of Priya  Entertainments  Pvt  Ltd Arijit Dutta were also present at the event.

Writer Amit Chowdhury said Ritwik Ghatak was not only a filmmaker for him, he was a great theorist.

The 5-days film festival will continue till Apr 13 and will screen films like 'Meghe  Dhaka  Tara', 'Komal  Gandhar', 'Subarnarekha' ,' Titas Ekti Nadir Naam' and 'Jukti Takko r Goppo'.
