Actor Jagdeep, fondly remembered as 'Soorma Bhopali' of Sholay, dies

Mumbai/IBNS: Veteran actor-comedian Jagdeep, famously remembered for playing the role of 'Soorma Bhopali' in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay, died at his Mumbai residence on Wednesday. He was 81.

According to reports, the actor was suffering from age-related problems.

Jagdeep is survived by his wife, daughters and sons, among them are actors Javed Jaffrey and TV personality Naved Jaffrey.

Born as Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey and better known by his stage name Jagdeep, the actor-comedian appeared in more than 400 films. 

His famous roles include 'Soorma Bhopali' in Sholay (1975), 'Machchar' in Purana Mandir (1984) and 'Salman Khan's dad' in Andaz Apna Apna (1994).

He also directed the movie titled 'Soorma Bhopali', with his Sholay-based character as the protagonist.

Jagdeep featured in some popular films like China Gate, Hasina Aur Nagina, Phool Aur Kaante, Insaan Bana Shaitan, Andaz Apna Apna, Shahenshah, Qurbani, Phir Wohi Raat, Life Partner, Bombay To Goa and Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye among others.

He was last seen in the film 'Gali Gali Chor Hain' in 2012.

Actor Anil Kapoor condoled the passing away of the veteran actor and tweeted: "Jagdeep Saab was one of the greatest actors of India...I was his huge fan & was lucky enough to have worked with him in Ek Baar Kaho & many more films...he was always extremely supportive & encouraging...sending my heartfelt condolences & prayers to my friend Javed & family..."

Actor Ajay Devgn took to Twitter to share the news and wrote: "Heard the sad news of Jagdeep Saab’s demise. Always enjoyed watching him on screen. He brought so much joy to the audience. My deepest condolences to Jaaved and all members of the family. Prayers for Jagdeep Saab’s soul."
