Bollywood's popular mother Sulochana Latkar dies at 94; PM Modi, Amitabh Bachchan mourn

Mumbai: One of the most popular onscreen moms of Bollywood, Sulochana Latkar, who also played the role of megastar Amitabh Bachchan's mother in several movies, died on Sunday.

She was 94.

According to reports, she died due to age-related complications.

Her daughter Kanchan Ghanekar confirmed her death with The Indian Express and said, “She had age related health issues and breathing difficulties. She died this evening at 6pm.” 

In her illustrious career, she worked in over 200 Hindi movies and more than 50 Marathi movies.

Sulochana Latkar's movie career:

She made her earliest film appearances in the Marathi film Sasurvas (1946).

She rose to prominence through her roles in Marathi films like Jeevacha Sakha (1948), Johar Maibaap (1950), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Chimani Pakhre (1954), Dhakti Jaoo (1958), Sangtye Aika (1959), Laxmi Aali Ghara (1965) and Sadhi Manse (1965) among many others, as per National Film Archive of India's Facebook post..

She also established herself in the Hindi film industry through a prolific filmography that spanned more than six decades and included the films Nai Reet (1948), Ab Dilli Dur Nahin (1957), Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Sujata (1959), Bandini (1963), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Himmatwala (1983) and Khoon Bhari Mang (1985) among many others.

PM Modi, Amitabh Bachchan mourn:

Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning her death as he tweeted: " The passing of Sulochana Ji leaves a big void in the world of Indian cinema. Her unforgettable performances have enriched our culture and have endeared her to people across generations. Her cinematic legacy will live on through her works. Condolences to her family. Om Shanti."

"We have lost another great of our Cinema World - Sulochana ji .. the gentle, generous, caring Mother that played in several films with me  .. she had been ailing for some time .. and this afternoon she left for her heavenly abode," Big B wrote in his blog.

"I had been monitoring here condition with her family .. but finally the sad news!" he said.

They had worked together in several movies including Reshma Aur Shera, Muqadddar Ka Sikander, Majboor and Roti Kapada Aur Makan.

Actress Madhuri Dixit tweeted: "Sulochana Tai was one of the most loved and graceful actresses cinema has seen. My favourite film of hers will always be Sangate Aika. Her performance in every film was memorable. I will miss our conversations may you rest in peace. Your contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered."
