Kolkata, Oct 1 (IBNS) Suman Ghosh's period film Kadambari, based on the life of Rabindranath Tagore’s sister-in-law who died an untimely death in 1884, has got two awards at the prestigious Washington DC South Asian Film Festival, the director says.
"Kadambari bags two awards at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival. Best Feature Film and Best Actress for Konkona SenSharma," an ecstatic Suman posts in the Facebook.
"Congrats to the team and Konkona. Best Director was Chaitanya Tamanhe for the incredibly good COURT (so happy for this)," Suman tweeted complimenting another Indian entry in the festival which fetched the best director honour.
Incidentally Marathi film 'Court' is India's official entry to Oscars.
The news brought jubilation in the Bengali film fraternity with national award winning Chotuskone and upcoming 'Rajkahini' director Srijit Mukherji commenting 'Stupendous news!!! Tight hug."
Kadambari Devi, 13 years younger to her playwright husband Jyotirindranath, came to the Tagore household in July 1868, and committed suicide on April 19, 1884,
The Washington DC South Asian Film Festival authorities confirmed the news of two honours for the film when contacted by IBNS over mail.
"Kadambari Devi, her space in the poet's life, her equations with other women in the Tagore household as well as husband Jyotirindranath Tagore, made her one of the most intriguing characters in Bengali literary history. And I had only Konkona in mind," Suman had earlier said.
The young Rabindranath was portrayed by Parambrata Chatterjee.
The film was commercially released in May and acclaimed by the Bengali audiences.
