Mayawati remark: CMS removes Randeep Hooda as UN treaty ambassador
Mumbai: The Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has removed Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda as ambassador over his derogatory remarks against former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati.
" The Secretariat of the Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has become aware of a video clip of CMS Ambassador Randeep Hooda from around 2012 that was recently posted on social media. The CMS Secretariat finds the comments made in the video to be offensive, and they do not reflect the values of the CMS Secretariat or the United Nations," CMS said in a statement.
"Mr. Hooda was appointed as a CMS Ambassador for Migratory Species in February 2020 due to his support for the conservation of wildlife. The CMS Secretariat was unaware of the 2012 video at that time," read the statement.
"While CMS is a treaty of the United Nations, it is separate from both the UN Secretariat and the UN Environment Programme. The only entity for which Mr. Hooda served as a brand Ambassador was CMS.Mr. Hooda no longer serves as a CMS ambassador," the statement further said.
A video has gone viral on the social media recently where Hooda could be heard allegedly making a derogatory remark against Mayawati during a chat show.
It is not clear when the video was shot.
What is CMS?
As an environmental treaty of the United Nations, CMS provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, the Range States, and lays the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures throughout a migratory range.
