Paoli Dam shoots in real time stage rehearsal atmosphere in Natoker Moto
Kolkata, Aug 6 (IBNS) Sporting the late 70s look of hair tied in bun with red ribbon and red colored saree, actor Paoli Dam lends her voice as a stage actor-singer in 'Natoker Moto' (Like a Play) where she portrays the battle of a popular star in the male dominated world of showbiz.
Paoli said the film talks about the struggle of any woman achiever from commercial stage queen Nati Binodini to group theatre livewire Keya Chakroborty or from a writer to a painter, in every domain.
"We seldom find solace in our times of crisis. In the film my character Kheya is spurned by the person during her hours of extreme crisis whom she had initially trusted so much and married. Here she finds her true companion in her mom, her only companion," Paoli said.
Talking about the theatrical elements in the film, the debut venture of a venerable playwright in Bengal, Paoli says she has lent her voice to a popular stage song of the famous group theatre production Bhalo Manush in the film.
"We had tried to shoot in real time stage atmosphere and there were collages from Tin Poisar Pala, Antigone and other productions by leading theatre groups belonging to that era in Bengal. We have sought to explore three zones - real, surreal and theatrical," she said.
Paoli, who confides that one month shoot phase for the film was quite cerebral recalls, started inhabiting within the world of Kheya for days. It was taxing but very fulfilling for an actor, she noted.
"So once the shoot was over I did not take up any work for two months at a stretch. I needed that break," she said.
Paoli, who took four months' preparation to get into the skin of Kheya's role before the shoots, said growing up during that phase when new theatre productions used to create a buzz and her own stint as a child performer on stage in a premier children's theatre group, helped her immensely to grasp the nuances.
"I think it is in the same space of Komal Gandhar by Ritwik Ghatak," she said about the film.
Music director Debojyoti Misra says a woman actor has to face multiple crisis situations, many times more than a man.
"I am happy a film now etches out the life and journey of a female actor in this way for the first time. Theatre and cinema feast on each other," Debojyoti, who has weaved the threatre songs in the plot of a cinema to invoke the flavour, said.
Natoker Moto, produced by Friend's Communication, stars theatre personality-minister-actor Bratya Basu and Saswata Chatterjee in two roles of theatre personalities.
