The Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar turns 86
Lata, dubbed as the Nightingale of India owing to her rich and melodious voice, was born in the year 1929 in Indore, Indore State (Present day Madhya Pradesh) to Shevanti and Deenanath Mangeshkar.
The eldest of the five children, Lata entered the entertainment industry at the tender age of 13, where she sang and acted. She is the elder sister of another legendary singer Asha Bhosle.
In 2001, the Indian Government awarded her the ‘Bharat Ratna’, India’s highest civilian award.
She is also the winner of multiple other awards, including the Padma Awards. She received the Padma Bhushan in 1969. Twenty years later, in 1989 she was conferred with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award for entertainment.
Other movie award includes 3 National Film Awards, 6 Filmfare Awards for Best Playback Singer among several others.
