Virat Kohli, Shahid Afridi condemn Christchurch mosques attacks

Christchurch, Mar 15 (IBNS): Several cricketers, including Indian captain Virat Kohli, expressed their sadness over the loss of lives in the attacks on two mosques in New Zealand's Christchurch city on Friday.

The attacks left 49 people killed.

"Shocking and tragic. My heart goes out to the ones affected by this cowardly act at Christchurch. Thoughts with the Bangladesh team as well, stay safe. ," Kohli tweeted.

Ex-Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi described the attack as 'horrifying'.

"Horrifying tragedy #Christchurch. I found NZ one of safest, most peaceful places, people are friendly. Spoke to Tamim big relief B'desh squad/staff is safe. World must together! stop hatred!Terrorism has no religion! Prayers for bereaved families. May Allah bless the departed," he tweeted.

At least 49 people have died in New Zealand's worst terror attack in which gunmen stormed two city mosques on Friday and opened fire, police commissioner Mark Bush said.

Briefing the media in Wellington, police chief Bush said: "At the Deans Avenue mosque, we now know that 41 people have lost their lives. And at Linwood Avenue, seven have lost their lives."

More than 40 have been injured and one of them has succumbed to injuries. Consequently, the death toll in this attack stands at 49.
