New Delhi, July 1 (IBNS): Indian cricketer Vijay Shankar, who will be best remembered for taking his first wicket in the debut ball in a World Cup match against Pakistan, has been ruled out from the World Cup due to injury.

He will also be remembered for performing not much satisfactorily at number four spot for the national side in the World Cup encounters after the Pakistan match.

"Indian cricketer Vijay Shankar was struck on the left big toe whilst batting in the nets on June 19th in Southampton. He was able to play in an unrestricted manner in the following two matches against Afghanistan and West Indies," BCCI said in a statement.

"Following the match on June 27, the condition of his toe worsened and a CT scan showed he sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe. The condition will require a minimum of three weeks to heal. The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup," it said.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mayank Agarwal as Vijay Shankar's replacement following a request from the Indian team management for a suitable top-order batsman.

The International Cricket Council has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 has approved Mayank Agarwal as a replacement player for Vijay Shankar in the India squad for the remainder of the tournament.

Twenty eight-year-old Agarwal, a top-order batsman, has played two Tests but is yet to play an ODI.
