Dhaka/IBNS: Bangladesh's star player Tamim Iqbal was named as the skipper of the ODI squad after long-serving captain  Mashrafe Mortaza played his last against Zimbabwe as the leader of the national team.

The decision was made at the 8th meeting of the BCB Board of Directors.

Declaring Tamim as captain, BCB President Nazmul Hassan, MP told Bangladesh Cricket Board: “Masrafe Bin Mortaza has recently stepped down from the ODI captaincy after a fantastic tenure. I firmly believe that the achievements in the one-day format would not have been possible without him leading the team. Now is the time for someone else to take over the reign and carry Bangladesh forward.

“We have selected Tamim as captain expecting him to lead the team long-term," he said.

Tamim is one of the most experienced members of Bangladesh side having made his international debut in 2007.

He is the highest scorer in ODIs for Bangladesh with 7202 runs in 207 matches.

His 13 one-day hundreds is also the most by a Bangladeshi batsman.

Tamim has already captained Bangladesh in three ODIs in Sri Lanka in 2019 when he stood in for his predecessor Mortaza who was unavailable for the series due to injury.
