Abuja/Xinhua/UNI: The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said its recent appointment of Joseph Yobo as a member of the technical coaching crew of the senior national team was to groom him for a future team management role.

"We are looking up to Yobo to manage the Super Eagles in future and being part of the team's technical crew will give him that opportunity to coach the Super Eagles in the near future," said Amaju Pinnick, president of the NFF in a chat with local reporters on Monday.

Yobo, a former captain of the Super Eagles and three-time world cup veteran, was appointed the assistant coach of the national team in February.

This is not the first time a retired Nigerian player has been handed such a role.

"Yobo's presence in the Super Eagles will help the team," said Pinnick, who further explained that the former player is expected to contribute to the development of the Nigerian team ahead of the 2021 African Cup of Nations and the 2022 World Cup qualifications.

The 39-year-old Yobo quit international football in June 2014.
