Sofia: Bulgarian professional tennis player Grigor Dimitrov has confirmed that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Hi Everyone-I want to reach out and let my fans and friends know that I tested positive back in Monaco for Covid-19," he posted on Instagram.

He urged people who came in contact with him in the past one week to get tested.

"I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during these past days gets tested and takes the necessary precautions," he said.

"I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused. I am back home now and recovering. Thanks for your support and please stay safe and healthy. GD," he said.

Recently, he played in a tournament which also featured Serbian icon Novak Djokovic.

World number 19 Grigor Dimitrov participated in the Adria Tour event. It was held in Belgrade.

With both Serbia and Croatia easing lockdown measures before the events, players were not obliged to observe social distancing rules in either country and were seen embracing at the net at the end of their matches, BBC reported.

The Bulgarian, 29, withdrew from the second tournament in Zadar, Croatia on Saturday with sickness after his opening loss to Borna Coric, reports BBC.

No major tennis event has taken place so far since March due to the pandemic outbreak.

The US Open will take place without fans from Aug 31 to Sept 13.
