KL Rahul to lead India for SA ODIs, Bumrah named vice-captain

Mumbai/UNI: KL Rahul will lead India for the three-match One-Day International series against South Africa.

Jasprit Bumrah has been named as vice-captain, the Chairman of Selection Committee, Chetan Sharma, announced on Friday.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee met and decided to go with Rahul as Rohit Sharma, who was appointed as captain of limited-overs cricket, has been ruled out owing to injury.

Sharma had suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month during a practice session.

"Rohit Sharma is not fit so he's not going. He's in rehab, building on fitness. We selectors didn't want to take a chance. If he isn't 100 percent fit, selectors won't take a chance," Chetan said in a virtual press conference.

Talking about Rahul as captain for the series, the chairman of selectors hinted that they are looking at him as a potential leader in the future.

"We are looking at Rahul. He's an all-format player. He's proved his leadership qualities. We are grooming him," he said.

Squad: KL Rahul (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaekwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah (vc), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj.
