Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. India bowlers, however, gave their side early advantage by picking up the wicket of David Warner (0) in the second over of the match. Umesh Yadav removed in-form David Warner which surely gave the hosts an initial blow.
Chris Rogers (57) and Shane Watson
(52) joined together to put up 115 runs in the second wicket partnership to stabilize the Australian innings after the initial jolt.
Mohammed Shami gave India their second blow as he dismissed Rogers in the 37 th over. Off-spinner Ashwin soon picked up Watson as Australia were reduced to 115 for three.
Shaun Marsh (32) and Smith joined in a small partnership of 69 runs in the fourth wicket to give Australia some amount of breather after two consecutive loss of wickets.
Smith remained unbeaten at 72 with as he hit four boundaries and a six.
Shami and Umesh Yadav bowled well and took two wickets in the match.
Debutant Joe Burns contributed 13 runs in his first innings before his wicket was picked up by Yadav.
Brad Haddin and Smith are unbeaten at the crease and will continue the innings on the second day of the match on Saturday.
Australia are currently leading the series 2-0.
