Kohli, Rahane help India fight back by posting 462/8
Resuming the day from 108 for one, Kohli smashed a brilliant 169 and Rahane added 147 as the duo added 262-run to give Australia a tough challenge.
Before Kohli and Rahane hold the fortress, India lost the wickets of overnight unbeaten batsmen Murali Vijay (68) and Cheteshwar Pujara (25).
India were struggling at 147 for three when Rahane and Kohli resumed the fight back for the hosts.
After Rahane departed, India lost their grip over the match as they lost four quick wickets in the last session of the day.
Kohli departed in the last over of the day as pacer Mohammed Shami (9*) remained unbeaten at stumps.
Skipper MS Dhoni failed with his willow as he contributed only 11 runs.
Ryan Harris picked up four wickets for Australia.
The hosts were bowled out for 530 runs in their first innings with Steve Smith scoring 192 runs with his willow.
India trail Australia by 68 runs. The hosts lead the series 2-0.
