Mumbai/IBNS: Skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda were the top players on Monday as one of the two new franchises, Lucknow Super Giants, defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 12 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) here.

Lucknow started off poorly losing Quinton de Kock, Evin Lewis and Manish Pandey cheaply putting Rahul's team were under pressure at 27/3 within five overs.

Since then, Rahul, who scored 68 off 50 overs, partnered Hooda, who hit 51 off just 33 balls, steadied the innings taking Lucknow to a safe shore.

Young batter Ayush Badoni's yet another significant contribution, this time a cameo of 19 off 12 balls, helped Lucknow to score 169/7 in 20 overs.

Hyderabad's start too was shaky losing wickets but the team progressed under Rahul Tripathi's batting as he scored 44 off 30 balls.

Later wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran contributed 34 off 24 balls to take the match to an interesting phase.

However, back to back fall of wickets let down Hyderabad as they ended up scoring 157/9 in 20 overs.
