AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers: Fight breaks out between India, Afghanistan players after India's thrilling 2-1 win
Kolkata: A section of Afghan and Indian football players engaged in a brawl following the latter's brilliant win in AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers at the VYBK Stadium in Kolkata, media reports said.
India beat Afghanistan 2-1 on Saturday, June 11 in a Group D match where Afghans proved tough adversaries. The natives finished victorious riding on captain Sunil Chhetri's class performance.
The scuffle broke out after the match ended. Initially three Afghan and two Indian players pushed and shoved each other, a video from the match widely shared online shows.
India's star goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh tried to intervene to calm down the players but he got pushed around by Afghanistan players who gathered in large numbers.
The AFC officials ran to the spot to take control of the situation but the scuffle only escalated.
Players traded blows and pulled each other by their shirts, presenting an ugly scene that nobody expected after a high-quality match.
With the win over Afghanistan coming days after their victory over Cambodia, India is now placed in the second position, tied on 6 points with Group D toppers Hong Kong.
The reason behind the scuffle is still not known.
