Birmingham CWG: India's Sanket Mahadev Sargar clinches silver medal in 55 kg men's weightlifting
Birmingham: India's Sanket Mahadev Sargar gave the country its first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as he clinched silver in 55kg men's weightlifting event here on Sunday.
Sargar, who is the current national record holder, lifted a total of 248kg ( Snatch 113 kg; 135kg Clean and Jerk) to be second on the podium.
Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq lifted a total of 249kg, a Commonwealth Games record in the category, to win the gold medal.
Sri Lanka's Dilanka Isuru Kumara Yodage bagged bronze with a total lift of 225 Kg.
Sargar topped the snatch category with three legal attempts of -- 107kg, 111kg and 113 kg.
In the Clean and Jerk, he opened with 135kg and maintained his gold medal position.
In his second attempt the 21-year-old went for a 5kg extension and failed to make it through as he injured his elbow in the process.
Despite feeling discomfort in his elbow, Sargar went for the final attempt and thus could not make it. The Malaysian, however, attempted 142kg which he successfully lifted in his final attempt and denied Sargar the gold medal by only a kilo.
Sargar had shattered the commonwealth and national record after lifting 256kg (snatch-113kg; clean and jerk -143kg) at the Singapore Weightlifting International in February this year.
He also won gold at the Commonwealth Championships in December last and sealed his berth for Birmingham Games.
