T20 WC: Australia beat Ireland by 42 runs in Super 12 clash, keep semi-finals hope alive
Brisbane: Australia kept their semi-finals hopes still alive after defeating Ireland by 42 runs in the World T20 Super 12 stage clash here on Monday.
After scoring 179 runs for the loss of five wickets, Australia bowled out Ireland for 137 runs.
Skipper Aaron Finch hammered 63 runs and Marcus Stoinis contributed 35 as Australia posted a competitive total on the scoreboard.
The result of the match ended Ireland's challenge in the tournament.
Australia will next face Afghanistan in their last Super 12 clash.
Australia had reduced Ireland to 25-5 within four over.
However, the Irish batsmen tried to bounce back and it was Lorcan Tucker (71) who made things a bit difficult for Australia.
He hit nine boundaries and a six in the innings to reduce the margin of defeat and give an outside chance to Ireland to shock Australia.
Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa picked up two wickets each for Australia.
