Melbourne/IBNS: Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams won’t contest in this month’s Australian Open owing to an injury, the organisers said on Saturday.

All set to play at her 22nd Australian Open after a wild card entry, Williams bid goodbye to the tournament after sustaining an injury while prepping up for the play in Auckland Classic.

“Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open due to an injury sustained at the ASB Classic in New Zealand,” the Australian Open said in a tweet.

Australian Open will take place from Jan. 16-29.

After losing to unseeded Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck at the U.S. Open in the first round, Williams only returned to action in Auckland where she defeated compatriot Katie Volynets before losing to China’s Zhu Lin.

Williams, 42, who is a two-time finalist at Melbourne Park, is now ranked outside the top 1,000.
