Serena wins Australian Open title

Melbourne, Jan 31 (IBNS): American Tennis icon Serena Williams clinched sixth Australian Open title by beating Russian star Maria Sharapova in the women's singles final here on Saturday.

The American defeated her opponent 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

Serena clinched the final match quite brilliantly after Maria had made a good comeback int he second set of the match.

With 19 major singles titles, Serena, who began the year with a bang, moves past Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

“Standing here with 19 majors is something I never thought would happen,” Williams  was quoted as saying by ausopen.com.

“I went on the court with a ball, a racquet and a hope," she said.

“I have to congratulate Maria,” she added. “She really pushed me tonight – she played a great match, not only for you guys but for women’s tennis.”
