Dean Elgar powers South Africa to 11-run lead over India in Centurion

Centurion/IBNS/UNI: Dean Elgar's unbeaten hundred powered South Africa to forge a thin lead of 11 runs over India at stumps on day two of the maiden Test match here on Wednesday.

Though South Africa lost an early wicket upfront in the form of Aiden Markram, Elgar, who remained unbeaten at 140 at stumps, stitched two vital partnerships, first with Tony de Zorzi (28 off 56 balls) and David Bedingham (56 off 87 balls) to help the hosts to post 256/5 when the players returned to the change room for the day.

The Indian pace battery was on Wednesday led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who scalped two wickets each, leaving one for Prasidh Krishna.

KL Rahul cracks 8th ton, India post 245

KL Rahul emerged as a shining epitome of grit for India as he cracked his eighth Test century on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa on Wednesday.

This is Rahul's second century in a row at the Centurion as he smashed a masterful century two years ago as an opener, which resulted in India clinching the first Test match, but losing the series 2-1. He scored 101 off 137 balls and scored 123 in 2021.

Rahul got to his century today as a wicket-keeper, batting at No.6 after Rishabh Pant's unfortunate road accident a year ago. He shipped India's trembling innings with poise and promise.

Though the South African pace attack used the prevailing conditions with finesse, Rahul showcased the craft of playing the ball sideways, instead of playing behind the ball on the dicy wicket.

He was quick to lean to the well-pitched-up balls and stand tall to either punch or executive pull shots. He was a frame of mastery.

Despite losing wickets at the other end, Rahul maintained his composure, allowing his lower-order partners to make useful contributions while executing delightful shots, including a jaw-dropping six off Gerald Coetzee to get to his century.

Had it not been for Rahul's century, India would not have crossed the 200-run mark as they folded their innings at 245 after South Africa Captain Temba Bavuma sent the tourists to bat first. This knock bears massive significance, not just for him but for India in this game.
