Paris Olympics 2024: PV Sindhu's 3rd Olympic medal hope dashed; India faces mixed day with shooting bronze and multiple setbacks
Paris: On day 6th, Swapnil Kusale's bronze medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions shooting event at Paris Olympics 2024, bringing India's total medal count to three in the games.
Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh also contributed with a bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol shooting, and Bhaker secured another bronze in the individual event. Unfortunately, Anum Moudgil and Sift Kaur Samra did not advance past the qualifications in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions.
PV Sindhu's bid for a third Olympic medal ended in disappointment as she was defeated by China's He Bing Jiao, 19-21, 14-21. The first game was closely contested, but Sindhu struggled to keep pace with the Chinese sixth seed. Sindhu, who won silver at Rio 2016 and a bronze by defeating He at Tokyo 2020, was unable to replicate her past successes.
This setback followed another disappointment for India, as men's doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 to Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
In men's singles, Lakshya Sen easily defeated HS Prannoy in the round of 16, as Prannoy appeared exhausted.
In other events, India faced challenges as Akshdeep, Vikash, and Paramjeet fell short in the 20km race final. Pravin Jadhav was defeated in his round of 32 match in archery, and Nikhat Zareen lost to China's Wu Yu in the women's 50kg boxing round of 16. The men's hockey team also suffered a 1-2 defeat to Belgium.
In sailing, Vishnu Saravanan finished 10th in the first race of the day in the men's dinghy event but had a disappointing 34th-place finish in the second race, leaving him 25th in the overall rankings.
