Indian hockey team made the country proud by registering a 3-2 victory against mighty Australia in a crucial group stage clash of the Paris Olympics on Friday.

This was the first time the Men in Blue beat the Australian team in an Olympics game in the past 52 years.

The last victory India recorded over the Australians was in the 1972 Munich games.

In a thrilling encounter that went down to the wire, Abhishek and Harmanpreet Singh (2) scored the goals to give India a memorable victory in Paris.

Thomas Craig and Blake Govers scored the two goals for the opponent squad.

The match was crucial for India as a win against Australia brightened their chances of finishing in the second spot in Group B.

India have 10 points from five games while Australia dominate the group with nine points after playing equal number of matches.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh dominated the proceedings in the match.

The bar was defended positively by veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh who is playing his last international outing.

He made innumerable number of saves and blocked the Australian aggression with determination to keep the lead intact.

India have already qualified for the quarter-finals after winning three matches.

Group topper Belgium only defeated the South Asian side.
